Iceland Votes Against European Union Membership: Next Steps and Implications

Date:

Iceland has reaffirmed its decision not to pursue full European Union membership, prioritizing national sovereignty and the protection of its key domestic industries. The decision is heavily influenced by concerns over fisheries management, natural resources, and agricultural autonomy. Although formal accession negotiations remain suspended, Iceland will continue to maintain close economic ties with European partners through its existing membership in the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area, ensuring uninterrupted single-market access without integrating into the bloc’s political and regulatory framework.

  • Iceland has maintained its position against pursuing full accession to the European Union.
  • Preserving sovereign control over domestic fishing waters and maritime resources remains the primary obstacle to membership.
  • The country retains access to the EU internal market through the European Economic Area (EEA) agreement.
  • Iceland continues its participation in the Schengen Area, allowing passport-free travel across participating European nations.

  1. What will happen now? Simple, just what happened to Ireland. The unelected, undemocratic, authoritarian bureaucrats of the EU will force Iceland to vote again … and again, and again, and again, until the "correct" outcome is achieved.

  2. As an alternative to being isolated flag-waving nationalists on a mid-Atlantic rock, which country or group of countries in the world would you rather align with than Europe? The idea of not even talking about it seems bolshy, headstrong and dismissive. That's not a sensible way for any country to operate.

  3. Excellent questions. The journalist needs to go viral. As far as Iceland dealing with the UN beware of their fear tactics. They might not have tried it on you yet but the globalists are patient and won't take no for an answer. They will promise you security and wealth but actually you will become a target as they steal your wealth. Good luck.

  4. Good luck to them. Just wait until Agent Orange and his paymaster in the Kremlin find them as a soft target or China sends a troller fleet and we will see what happens then. I mean they may be economically and militarily strong enough to resist. I’d hope so. 🤞 anyways good luck.

  5. To be fair, Icelanders avoid confrontation when ever they can, so avoiding family or friends gathering to not have a debate is not that uncommon, just a bit amplified now then usual 😅

  6. It is alarming how divisive and hateful this election period became. Iceland has always had lively election campaigns and strong political debate, but I think most of us have never witnessed anything quite like what happened this time.

Something clearly shifted, and I don’t believe all of it happened organically. Whether the causes were internal, external, or a combination of both, I think Icelanders as a society need to seriously examine and understand what happened.

Democracy cannot thrive in the long term if political discussion continues in this direction, or escalates into even more extreme and hateful forms of discourse. We need to be able to disagree passionately without dehumanising or attacking one another.

And honestly, after this election, I would seriously consider banning election advertising altogether next time. At the very least, we need to rethink how political advertising is allowed to influence public discourse.

  7. Iceland is already in Schengen and EEA. So they are already in "EU basic" tier but have no say in rule making. I think they want to keep status quo.
    Possible reasons:
    – They hope Trump keeps on not being able to point them on map. They play "dead" to not attract attention.
    – EU cares about environment protection while Iceland is afraid, they will have to regulate part of their fishing industry that is not sustainable.

  8. Icelandic fisheries are controlled by a cartel of five families
Iceland has a very small and therefore fragile economy-currency combined with a real estate bubble.
So remains to be seen what happens when another crisis will hit.
Maybe this proud patriotism will lead to being bought by Trump

  9. Iceland is wealthy and they don't want a migration crisis. I guess the UK knew this was about to happen. After all they are at the heart of what caused the current world disorder. Only Ukraine wants in and then they will join Hungary and Poland against older members of the Eu 😂

  10. Smart by Island … the eu is a dictatorship with a bs Agenda …

I love Europe ! I love that I can Travel and work wherever I want and I truly feel european !
BUT : Ursula von der Leyen and the lobbyism . The dicatorlike force for climate politics , immigration , and Not accepting that souverein states can make their own decisions is a freaking joke !
They can’t Even stand for Peace and further Peace negotiation but Fund a senseless war for a corrupt Ukraine !

Can’t wait for the day people realize how corrupt and corrupted brussels really is .

  11. All depends upon the EU.There are those in the UK who still hanker after rejoining the EU.I voted to leave and unless the EU changes direction away from dreams of Political Union back towards Commercial Union -I would oppose UK re-entry.
Why should the Icelanders give away their vital Fishing Industry for the sake of EU Political Union.
