Houthis Seize Strategic Red Sea Chokepoint as Saudi Arabia Considers Response

Date:

Houthi forces in Yemen have expanded their control and operational reach over maritime routes near the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a vital Red Sea chokepoint connecting Asia and Europe. The resulting disruptions to global commercial shipping have created significant logistical and economic challenges worldwide. Meanwhile, neighboring Saudi Arabia faces a complex strategic dilemma, seeking to balance international security partnerships with its own priority to finalize a durable peace agreement with the Houthis, leading Riyadh to adopt a cautious diplomatic posture to avoid renewed cross-border hostilities.

  • Houthi forces have intensified operations targeting commercial vessels navigating the southern Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb strait.
  • Major international shipping companies have rerouted cargo around the Cape of Good Hope, resulting in extended transit times and higher freight costs.
  • Saudi Arabia has refrained from joining Western-led military strikes against Houthi positions to safeguard its domestic economic initiatives and infrastructure.
  • Riyadh continues to prioritize direct diplomatic negotiations with the Houthis to permanently wind down its military involvement in Yemen.

  1. Saudi Arabia’s failure to directly occupy, fortify, and defend these strategic maritime chokepoints is a catastrophic strategic miscalculation. For decades, Riyadh believed that buying the most expensive Western hardware automatically equalled military power. They have learned the hard way that high-tech weapons are useless without an integrated doctrine, rigorous training for asymmetric threats, and most importantly, soldiers who are willing to fight.

  2. Money & Technology cannot win the War's……….as USA, Israel KSA, UAE suffering from this syndrome…………Turkeye & Pakistan is opportunist alliance…..Turkeye & Pakistan see frightened Money Rich Arab Kingdoms capitalizing on their fear factor……..They don't have intent OR intention to help anybody except themselves…….. International Relations are about national interest not to serve others interest……….If USA, Israel cannot overcome the results in their favour then how come Turkeye & Pakistan can achieve that objectives for KSA ……. This is commonsense……..I hope wisdom will prevail……..

  3. Russia and China working through the wound (energy) of the West, employing their proxies, as the West did the same pushing Ukraine to scratch Russia. An exact tit for tat situation, where if the US expands the front, the wound will open wide and deeper.
