Allison Ellsworth on How She Built a Billion-Dollar Soda Brand From a Homemade Recipe

Date:

Allison Ellsworth, the co-founder of the prebiotic soda brand Poppi, successfully scaled her kitchen-brewed beverage into a major player in the beverage industry, recently reaching a billion-dollar brand status. Driven by her personal health journey, Ellsworth created an apple cider vinegar-based drink that eventually caught the attention of investors. Following a strategic rebranding and key investments, the company secured widespread retail distribution, challenging legacy soft drink giants by offering a functional, low-sugar alternative to traditional sodas.

  • Allison Ellsworth began brewing the prebiotic beverage in her home kitchen to address personal gut health issues.
  • The business, initially called Mother Beverage, gained early traction selling at local Texas farmers’ markets.
  • In 2018, the brand secured a critical $400,000 investment on the television show Shark Tank.
  • A rebranding campaign in 2020 transformed Mother Beverage into Poppi, featuring colorful packaging and a modern design.
  • The brand achieved rapid market expansion through major retailers such as Target, Costco, and Whole Foods, establishing itself as a leader in the functional soda category.

  1. Unless she's going for the 'cold-hearted, capitalistic, gaudy, wealth-inequality-loving, snobby villainess' look, then someone needs a public relations manager asap. Cringe🤦‍♂️

  2. Now that I’ve seen this I will never buy a Poppi product. Will that hurt her? Nope but I feel better knowing I’m not helping to pay for that ostentatious ring. Who in their right mind would feel comfortable walking around wearing that thing in today’s environment? Regular everyday folks are having trouble paying for necessities and she’s wearing that God-awful tacky thing. She’s totally tone deaf.

  3. I love stories where they have humble beginnings…most of these stories involve someone having a rich husband so they already afford not making money from the business initially. This lady should be a case study for other entrepreneurs.

  4. I hate all these new sodas and probiotic drinks that have come out, I’ve tried so many of them at Whole Foods. Why do they all have Stevia in them? Stevia is gross, it coats my tongue, it makes the back of my throat have a weird after taste. They can literally leave it out, there is already cane sugar in it.
