UK Shelves Chagos Islands Sovereignty Deal Following Opposition from Trump Administration

Date:

The British government has reportedly paused a deal to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius following opposition from the incoming administration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. While the agreement was intended to resolve a long-standing territorial dispute and secure the future of the strategic Diego Garcia military base, members of Trump’s transition team raised national security concerns. These concerns center on the potential for increased Chinese influence in the region. As a result, the UK has shelved the process to avoid diplomatic friction with its closest ally.

  • The United Kingdom has suspended plans to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after pressure from Donald Trump’s transition team.
  • Under the original agreement, the UK would retain a 99-year lease for the joint US-UK military base located on Diego Garcia.
  • Incoming US officials expressed fears that Mauritius’s sovereignty over the islands could allow China to expand its footprint in the Indian Ocean.
  • The Chagos Islands have been under British control since 1814, but international courts have recently ruled that the UK’s administration is illegal.
  • The decision to shelf the deal reflects a shift in UK foreign policy as it seeks to align with the strategic priorities of the next US administration.

  1. Correct me if I've misunderstood here, but….
I was under the impression that the plans to hand the islands over to Mauritius were all down to Starmer… that's how it was reported… I think.

That World courts had made the decision is news to me. That the Conservatives started negotiations is also news to me…

I'm all for the UK retaining control, but, to do so alone isn't something we can really do unless we spend a damn sight more on the military to increase capacity and capability.
The US adding weight to the current capability made sense… upto a point…
Given that Trump has thrown a wobbly about using the base for offensive capability against Iran, and then stamping his little foot and not wanting to use the base is shortsighted and strategically ridiculous. The islands were important for keeping Chinese subs and ships in check…
I take it that China will now have an avenue out of the South China Sea and free access to the Indian ocean…

    What a bloody mess!!

  2. Cant get my head around a country being so eager to give territory away and pay billions in the process. Israel is taking territory and killing civilians, and the UN is worrying about the Chagos Islands

  3. Starmer and the UK is just following a difficult process. Say No, the UK upsets the UN and Mauritius. Say Yes He upsets the US and has to pay for a disappearing island over 99 years. Trump sort of lets him off the hook for 3 years, and kicks the Chagos issues down the road and into the long grass.
So sort of the best outcome for Britain.. All 3 parties need to agree.

  4. Oh, so now internationally binding rulings are optional to this extent? I see, we really aren't even trying anymore. Then forgive me for laughing mirthlessly the next you turn around to harp on about international law. Keep chipping away at the bedrock and you will find yourself seen as bereft of honour and unworthy of respect, to such that all your words are held in utter contempt.
