Fake Marriage Scams Target Single Men in China

Date:

A growing number of men in rural China are falling victim to organized marriage scams driven by a severe national gender imbalance. Following decades of the one-child policy, millions of men face difficulties finding domestic partners. Unscrupulous brokers exploit this demographic gap by promising introductions to brides, often from lower-income backgrounds or neighboring countries, in exchange for steep dowries and agency fees. In many cases, these arrangements are fraudulent, with the brides disappearing shortly after the money is transferred, leaving victims severely in debt.

  • Decades of sex-selective practices under the former one-child policy have created a demographic surplus of an estimated 30 million unmarried men in China.
  • Marriage brokers target single, rural men by offering matchmaking services that require substantial upfront costs and traditional bride prices.
  • Scams often involve organized networks where women agree to short-term marriages before abandoning the home once financial payments are secured.
  • Victims often take on significant family debt to fund the marriage expenses, resulting in severe financial hardship following the bride’s departure.
  • Authorities face challenges in prosecuting these cases due to the complex nature of cross-border human trafficking and informal matchmaking arrangements.

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الحمد لله رب العالمين حمدا كثيرا الذي بنعمته تتم الصالحات ))

وأعوذ بك من شماتة الأعداء ))

  2. I've encountered this situation before. The matchmaker only cares about making money; she doesn't care about anything else. For a matchmaker, she won't carefully match you with a girl.

  3. I have heard more Western intellectuals and businessmen lately make it sound like China is a utopian state where gold is coming out of everyone and everything. Can kinda understand the businessmen. They want to make more money and China is a big market but the intellectuals less so as they are supposed to be the smartest people in the room. Even the US in its 1950s and early 1960s heyday had problems that came bubbling up later in the 1960s and the 1970s to now so why should anyone assume that China of all countries is perfect currently?

  4. Because of the one child policy which was an absolute disaster for China. Could see this coming a mile off. Not much sympathy to be honest. They aborted millions of girls. Also to add: they have not learned the lesson to value females. You can't BUY a human being. It's messed up.

  5. Dude is very short, and married a woman taller than him. And he is poor. He literally has to be a billionaire to do that, but 70k is enough money. Of course it's fake. Women in china have standards, for him to be from the villages, poor, he needs to be at least a foot taller than the wife for the women to stay. And guizhou has more women? So the women there will take less money? Why don't the women there go to other parts of china to get more money in a marriage? That's exactly the scam.

  6. I read this article on the BBC site… more anti-Chinese 'at what cost' rhetoric from the BBC.

30M = 2.1% of 1.4B, but you sensationalise comparing to Australia.

1,546 prosecuted for marriage fraud in 15 months? The US logs 64,000+ annual romance scams, most never see a courtroom. And the 'property pressure' angle? Forbes put Chinese homeownership at 80% outright in 2016. Where's your article on that?Context, BBC

  7. Many families preferred a son, so girls were sometimes abandoned, placed in orphanages or not officially registered, and sex-selective abortions also occurred. As a result, China now has far more men than women, leaving many men unable to find a wife and vulnerable to scammers offering brides who do not even exist.

  8. This is just like the fake and dishonest politicians in the UK preying on the British general public. Promising them one thing and 'Never' delivering on what they promise. Whilst all the while they continue to steal more and more money based on what are quite clearly false pretences. Are – 'Blatant Lies'. Best wishes.

  9. China has lots of social problems recently. The main matter is that the central government hasn't fixed the same problems, and high officials of the government would just like to cover up various problems. That can't be good ideas. Diverse social problems should be eliminated by the government's adamant will. And the organization has enough power to try that. Because the nation is the People's Republic of China.

  10. Im a single guy for almost 12 years now, im 36 now and I want to be married, and have rejected women who comes along once in a while in my life , and im done with the phase being with a woman for 3-6 months( no im no a scumbag , I ALWAYS say casual dating 1st and lets see where it goes) I just want to be with a woman who dont see me as money dispenser and just someone to be with because thats is supposed to like forced to be in love with me kinda like having a stockholm syndrome.

and in my opinion best time to get married is when youre young adult and know your partner for years before being with them , it has more stronger foundation.
best time to make happy memories is when youre young.

  11. 1- Blame the previous generations for choosing males as the fetuses/kids they allowed to survive without aborting or unaliving upon birth. they are responsible for such a skewed male-female ratio.
2 – Blame the match-making agency. They are scammers, just like the women.
3 – Move and start over, where populations are more even (men and women), where no dowry type payment exists, and where a real woman might just say hi, even if you are in a boring job like factory work or stock shelving.

  12. I don't pity China. They foolishly believed the Western scam of "overpopulation" which tricked them into enforcing a one child policy that led to this huge problem. Yet, China still follows other deadly Western scams like GMO foods.

  13. Thanks to your brilliant government’s one child policy and your culture’s preference for boys over girls. Surplus of men. Sad, but this epidemic was preventable.
