Hungary’s political landscape is experiencing a significant shift as a new opposition movement challenges Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s long-standing governance. The movement, led by former government insider Péter Magyar, gained momentum following a public scandal involving a presidential pardon in a child abuse case. Large-scale protests in Budapest have signaled growing public dissatisfaction, marking a notable challenge to the consolidated power of the Fidesz party. As Hungary approaches upcoming elections, the emergence of this organized opposition represents a critical test for the country’s political future and the stability of the current administration.
- Péter Magyar, a former associate of the ruling Fidesz party, has transitioned into a prominent opposition leader.
- A political crisis was triggered by a presidential pardon granted to an individual convicted of concealing child abuse in a state-run home.
- The scandal led to the resignations of President Katalin Novák and former Justice Minister Judit Varga.
- Tens of thousands of Hungarians have participated in demonstrations in Budapest to protest government corruption and the current political system.
- The Hungarian government has responded to the movement by utilizing state-aligned media to characterize Magyar as a tool of foreign interests.
- The upcoming European and local elections are viewed as the first major electoral test for Magyar’s new political platform.

How do you think the change in leadership will impact Hungary?
@BBCNews why you have blocked comments on your video about fake asylum claims. Why did you even make that report if you didn't want people to be able to discuss it?
hope he’s put in a jail !
Total disaster.
The guy is not normal.
Pro EU BBC slop. Orban was ousted because he'd been in power for 16 years, and people get tired of the same message. There were also a few corruption scandals (not uncommon in the former Eastern Bloc). Embarrassingly bad journalism. He'll be back.
Orban's best friends: 1- money, 2- Putin, 3-Trump, 4- the chines kung fu panda.
People in Hungary will realise:
Mr Orban was right In all his politics.
Its an elaborate video, thanks for your work.
Dodged a bullet 🙏
Happy to see so many people full of joy and smiles. Whenever I was in Hungary in the last years everything felt strange. Now I’m really looking forward to visit again.
Oh dear just look at the rest of Europe
BBC… WHERE LIES ARE PROBABLY MORE COMMON THAN THE TRUTH
NO ONE WITH ANY SELF RESPECT WOULD WORK THERE
We did it. 🇭🇺 ❤
When Hungary is filled up with all of the "doctors and engineers" that Brussels decrees it accepts it might change its TUNE 😮
They ousted him, certain people didn't want him there defending their country agaisnt foreign interferience.
Hey BBC how about you do a "documentory" about the true power the WEF…oh yeah you won't.
Such dramatic bollocks. They'll be as happy as the UK is now after voting for Starmer and Labour. Hungary is still anti-immigration and pro-family so don't prematurely ejaculate, BBC.
It is super telling that Magyar supporters have no problem speaking with strangers and reporters and are police and smiling while Orban supporters won't talk and cranky crabapples. This usually the case with far righters and conservatives nationalists everywhere; they should think about this and what it my say about their beliefs
Péter Magyar's message 1-2 years ago to his current self. Wow!

As long as Hungary does not take its orders from Brussels who cares. If it does prepare to become Hungary in name only.
They look do happy 😊
I will celebrate fully on my return to Budapest in June. Look out Davy Byrnes, 6-3 bar, Hoffhouse and the Pulse.
From my perspective, the migration policies implemented in Poland and Hungary appear to be effective in contributing to reduced crime rates and enhanced security. This contrasts with the situation observed in Britain and other European nations. We anticipate the continued implementation of these policies.
Orban is just an opportunist, once he was a young communist (KISZ), then a democrat, a liberal then a conservative, then "christian", a russian trojan horse in EU and now he is an old outvoted prime minister.
Atleast Trump should learn from him how to accept defeat. Jokes apart, congratulations for the change.
Another country and its imminent downfall (Kalergi plan)
Great reporting as ever Katja. The demise of Orbanism. Watch out Trump and Farage.
Change the EU system it is oh how Janus the beeb is
Proud Hungarian here. Finally, we made it! I don’t have to be ashamed anymore when traveling abroad!
This system was so opressive, dismantling it brought such a huge euphoria like Hungary had won the FIFA world cup.
Katya Adler , is it just me chaps ?
