The Impact of Singapore’s Changing Refining Industry on Global Jet Fuel Supplies

Date:

The global aviation industry is currently adapting to significant disruptions as approximately 20% of the world’s exported jet fuel, largely originating from Russia, faces supply chain challenges. Following international sanctions and targeted drone strikes on Russian oil refineries, the flow of refined petroleum products has been redirected. These changes have forced airlines and fuel suppliers to navigate longer, more expensive trade routes, particularly affecting markets in Europe. The situation underscores the sensitivity of energy markets to geopolitical instability and the complexities of maintaining global fuel logistics during conflict.

  • Russia historically supplies nearly one-fifth of the jet fuel traded on the global export market.
  • Western sanctions and price caps implemented after the invasion of Ukraine have restricted Russia’s ability to sell fuel to its traditional European partners.
  • Recent drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure have further decreased production capacity by damaging critical distillation units at refineries.
  • To compensate for the loss of Russian supply, Europe has increased imports from refineries in the Middle East and India, resulting in significantly longer transit times.
  • The shift toward longer maritime routes has led to increased shipping costs and higher operational expenses for the global aviation sector.

  1. Representative Dan Crenshaw of Texas was on Real Time last night (5/8/26). The panel was asked about countries running out of jet fuel. Crenshaw response was “that’s their problem.”

  2. Conservative republicans are determined to destroy America and the economy. Yet impoverished and poorly educated conservative Americans will continue voting against their own self interests in every election. And when you combine this with 1/3 of mostly center left voters never voting then you get a country like America in its current predicament. Even when things continue to get worse and worse, conservatives will still not understand the details and still make everything worse.

  3. And yet nobody in any other country is willing to help the US put a stop to Iran. The US will be fine, we produce more oil than anyone else. Europe can sit on their hands and enjoy not being able to fly anywhere or afford gas.

  4. If companies have paid for a million barrels of fuel in advance and there is only a half million barrels available the other half million barrels drops out of the sky like magic. That's how hedging works. It's magic.
