Anderson Cooper Reports on Birdwatching and Biodiversity in Colombia

Date:

Journalist Anderson Cooper traveled to Colombia to explore the country’s status as the world’s leading destination for birdwatching. Boasting nearly 2,000 identified species, Colombia possesses greater avian diversity than any other nation. The growth of this niche tourism sector follows the 2016 peace treaty, which opened previously inaccessible and dangerous regions to scientists and enthusiasts. The report highlights how birding has emerged as a significant economic driver for local communities, fostering environmental conservation and providing a peaceful alternative for regions formerly impacted by decades of conflict.

  • Colombia is home to the highest bird diversity on the planet, with approximately 1,900 unique species recorded across its varied landscapes.
  • The 2016 peace agreement between the Colombian government and FARC rebels made remote high-altitude forests and rural areas safe for international researchers and tourists for the first time in 50 years.
  • Birdwatching tourism provides a sustainable economic engine for local populations, incentivizing the protection of natural habitats over extractive industries.
  • Local guides utilize specialized knowledge and mimicry of bird calls to locate rare and endemic species, such as the Multicolored Tanager and various hummingbirds.
  • The surge in birding interest is part of a broader effort to rebrand Colombia as a global hub for ecotourism and scientific discovery.

  1. I have an app of an American university you can id the sound and sometimes see the birds it’s really fun. One night I was driving home and a giant awl hit my front window but he didn’t get hurt because I was going like 20 or less. The awl appeared flopping his wings but they are silent that’s how they hunt. They can fly next to you in complete silence it’s amazing experience.

  2. I love birds and last week I saw a beautiful sight, a bald eagle with her two 1 year olds soaring overhead. I see bald eagles often but never with youngsters. Fabulous ❤

  3. Whoa. So these guys went birding in the wilds of Columbia and ran into anderson cooper! A story to tell.

Last week a friend and I walked up to the Pu'u O Umi natural forest area Hawaii and heard 4 native endangered spieces on Merlin. It's a steep grassy walk up then walked back barefoot in the grass. About 5 miles round trip.
