In an archival report examining the final years of communist rule in Albania, the broadcast documents the extreme isolation and state control that characterized the country under long-time dictator Enver Hoxha and his successor Ramiz Alia. Cut off from both Western nations and the broader Soviet bloc, Albania operated under intense domestic surveillance, religious prohibition, and severe economic isolation. The report details the living conditions of ordinary citizens, the widespread militarization of the landscape through defensive concrete bunkers, and the mounting social pressures that led to the regime’s eventual collapse in the early 1990s.
- This archival broadcast examines the final period of communist rule and subsequent democratic transition in Albania.

- Economic collapse and the fall of neighboring communist governments eventually fueled mass demonstrations, leading to open elections and the end of one-party rule.

60 minutes Australia is way better than their American version
This is what Albo wants for Australia
This is what Albo wants for Australia
"History lives in Albania…" "…and workers still toil with their hands…"
Only ~15 mins long, but already heavily padded with cliche.
What about Moldova as a perfect Soviet society today
All those broken horses and donkeys 😞
I guess this was filmed back in the 90's, she was pushing him hard about political prisoner, fast forward to today and look at the UK as an example and them locking up people for tweets like Lucy Connolly who got a 3 years sentence for a tweet she wrote, so just as bad if not worse than Albania
To have a corrupt king, you need corrupt and ignorant people to follow and worship the king.
I love it when communism falls!
You want to find communists? Go check out the faculty lounge of your local university.
As a Finn I am so f-ing proud "we" never joined this paradise at 5,10 and the "journalist" guy is a prime example of that 🙂
Btw "communism" was a so called social experiment doomed/stillborn from beginning, doomed to extinction
Brainwashed population 😢 I am so sorry for these people ! However, I've heard (may not be true) that the worst gangs in Europe are made of Albanians. I am wondering if they learned the cruelty from their communist leaders.
God help and protect any society that celebrates communism because the population's pain is immense, financial and intellectual.
As an Albanian, Hoxha wasnt perfect but he was a true 'Albanian' leader. He made our country sovereign whereas every other Albanian leader has sold out our country to others. Hoxha also had every right to be paranoid considering wr were rivals with all our neighbours and all of the worlds great powers. It was not an easy time and he couldnt take half measures
People need to remember that socialism is one step from communisism.
7:02 "…but after his death, the the Albanian people wished to make him immortal."
Sure sounds like a personality cult to me.
Now greens, teals and Labor want us to head in the same direction. Australia is heading the same way as Venezuela
Albanian here born in Tirana who for the past 25+ years lives in United States. Born in the 80s. Spend my childhood in communism. Then in early 90s like every other country in Europe, throughout the communist was a challenging from one system to the other. At least my generation it still is
Russia still runs like a communist country.
This must be an old report. Albania has been a parliamentary democracy since 1998. They have a constitution and a division of powers. Legislative, executive, and Judiciary. Over the last few years the Executive has slowly increased it's power causing unrest in the country. Sounds familiar.
From a centrist American: This so-called "documentary" is a disgrace. Nothing objective was done to describe the conditions of the people of Albania prior to WW2.
And almost nothing objective was done to describe its leadership or government during its communist period.
I am blocking this channel.
His justifacation for the regime is extraordinary. He's saying yes I have brain cancer but before I had a heart attack.
I first went to Albania in 2008, it was like a movie scene…
There were a particular type of Mercedes Benz that was just everywhere, we were later told that was the chosen car, Albanians had been stealing throughout Europe and bringing back.
Men were walking around with AK-47’s down the street and there were open fires all along the road, id never seen anything like it, in Europe.
I went back again in 2024 for a music festival, it was like night and day, at how different it looks, how much the coast has been developed, polar opposites.
Although it’s transitioned to a democracy, i know the current establishment, isn’t so favoured, due to recent foreign dealings and selling off of land, corruption etc.
One step forward, three steps back.
This is what Labor is doing now , Albo is hard core socialist,
I visited in 2019. People look like they will rob you but are so friendly. Please visit. Greeting from Australia. No visa, easy.
When was this first aired? Looks like 90s?
It ended 36 years ago. What's the point of this, other than smug Australian trying to portray the rest of the world as being stuck in a different time. Let's do a documentary about the genocides of Aborigines in the 20th century.
Why’s he so angry?
I can't believe it. 60 Minutes Australian kept the comments section open.
Question for Australians. Why are your mainstream media outlets so pro-censorship and always keep the comments section on their YouTube channels closed?
I heard they have great potassium.
Looks like a cult exactly like L Ron Hubbard and SCIENTOLOGT
Australia is closer to Albania these days oh the irony. 60 minutes Australia should focus on what has happened to Australia freedom.
Correction: Marxism did not include oppression and poverty for all. Marx taught equality and altruism.
But isn't that what the DSA are fighting for and want to turn the US into, a Communist Paradise. They already started with NYC.
Any Albanian who was interviewed for this episode had to have the blessing of the Albanian government, bc no one would be permitted to sputter a negative word about the country or how it was governed.
And how are they doing down In Nicaragua?
Gotta love Ortega.
10 years after a Democrat Socialists of America candidate wins the presidency.
Communism makes you poor and you will like it they lived better under Italian occupation then communism
I recently spent a month in Albania breathtakingly beautiful country and incredibly friendly people. I hope to go back again. No wonder it's become an expat hotspot
Albania is bordering with Serbia as well
All the current remaining communist countries will collapse just like Albania.
It is amazing how even the media who should be educated truly have no clue what they are talking about when it comes to communism.
They should be wearing goggles (operating metal lathes).
