CBS News Cameraman Reflects on Filming at Ground Zero During September 11 Attacks

Date:

A photojournalist has reflected on capturing 29 minutes of continuous footage at Ground Zero during the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City. Operating in close proximity to the World Trade Center, the cameraman documented emergency personnel mobilizing near the scene moments before the buildings fell. Despite being caught directly in the debris cloud following the collapse of the South Tower, he kept the camera running, preserving a real-time historical record of the immediate aftermath and the initial response efforts on the ground.

  • Photojournalist Mark LaGanga recorded 29 minutes of continuous street-level footage at the World Trade Center site on September 11, 2001.
  • The video captured firefighters, law enforcement personnel, and rescue workers organizing response operations and entering the complex.
  • The recording documented the collapse of the South Tower, capturing the arrival of the massive dust and debris cloud that enveloped the surrounding streets.
  • In the immediate aftermath of the collapse, the footage documented surviving first responders and civilians assessing the damage and assisting with evacuations.
  • The unedited material serves as a significant archival record detailing the conditions faced by emergency workers at Ground Zero.

  1. He shouldn't feel guilt for filming while others were first responders. Documenting it was crucial for history, lest we forget or try to minimize it as the years go by. 25 years makes it truly history, rather than current events.

  2. All this, yet you fail to call out by name the entity who was responsible for this. Is it because they have now multiplied and live within the our country? Is it fine with you that the nation lives through this memory attack and not name the threat within our nation, in order not to “offend” the entity and the ideology within our shores? Americans don’t usually betray their own!

  3. It's a shame he never asked the 69 year old who ran like hell for his name, which he did for most if not all the other people he met who were willing to talk, if memory serves. I understand he has never been identified.

  4. 3:49 a scary thought just came through my mind. There was a lot of people who WEREN'T found so what if alot of the dust and stuff we seen on the ground were actually people burnt and busted up and turned to dust like what if there's bits of people on the ground while we're watching interviews take place. That's crazy.
