Evaluating the Trump Administration’s Strategy for Regime Change in Venezuela

Date:

The United States’ policy of “maximum pressure” against the Venezuelan government, primarily established during the Trump administration, has faced significant challenges in achieving its goal of regime change. Despite the imposition of heavy economic sanctions and the 2019 international recognition of Juan Guaidó as the interim president, Nicolás Maduro has maintained his hold on power. This outcome has led to a reevaluation of diplomatic strategies as the Venezuelan opposition’s influence has shifted and global energy needs have altered the geopolitical landscape.

  • The U.S. government implemented aggressive economic sanctions intended to isolate the Maduro administration and cut off its primary revenue from the oil industry.
  • In 2019, the U.S. and dozens of other nations recognized Juan Guaidó as the legitimate leader of Venezuela, challenging the validity of the 2018 presidential election.
  • Nicolás Maduro successfully retained the support of the Venezuelan military and key high-level officials, preventing a collapse of the existing government structure.
  • The “maximum pressure” campaign contributed to severe economic contraction and humanitarian challenges within the country but did not result in a transfer of power.
  • The Venezuelan opposition eventually voted to dissolve the interim government led by Guaidó after several years of failing to displace Maduro.
  • Recent shifts in policy have seen a movement toward negotiations between the government and the opposition, alongside the temporary easing of some energy-related sanctions.

  1. The way I see this: Americans are terrorising small countries by bombing, killing and kidnapping. The only reason Rodriguez receives those yanks was because of fear …
I bet100 bucks when someone kidnap Trump and his family, the whole world will celebrate in jubilation with spendid fireworks, nobody will ask for return of that orange wacko.

  2. Bias journalism trump his goal in every country his government changes to control the economy and oils just like he trying hard to control in Iran 🇮🇷 the evil dictator of Satan wants to conquer the world 🌍 by making lies and propaganda corruption British government and government are all corrupt history supporters trump

  3. Democracy is how they got Chavez and communism in the first place, rejecting the theft by US oil revenues and never-ending control from D.C. Democracy is how we ended up with Trump….twice. Then again, "democracy" is just newspeak, since the term means the people vote for things that will affect the common good, whereas US citizens are only allowed to vote for one of two masters offered by the two ruling parties, not on anything that affects their lives.

  4. Smart citizens should always fear rulers no matter how they are selected to force unity using extortion and violence. Only free people have a chance for a great life, while even the people of China are doing better with their communist central planners than the US ones because China isn't as corrupt or incompetent (yet).

  5. Was the primary motivaton for taking Maduro the desire to increase the pressure on the Cuba? When you kidnap the president and leave the rest of the regime in charge, is that a regime change? Considering all the messy historical examples to which one can compare this intervention, so far it is going fantastic. Did the result embolden Trump on Iran? That is far from clear. What do Iran and Cuba have in common?

  6. US has no interest in democracy. They are only there to strip Venezuala's of its oil. And THIS at a time when the oil needs to stay underground 😞 This is a disaster on so many levels.
