Factors Driving the Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan

Date:

Afghanistan is experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis driven by economic collapse, natural disasters, and international restrictions. Following the political transition in 2021, the abrupt halt of foreign aid and the freezing of state assets crippled the nation’s economy and banking system. Coupled with successive years of severe drought and restrictions on female aid workers, these factors have left over half the country’s population facing acute food insecurity and dependent on humanitarian assistance for survival.

  • The suspension of international development aid, which previously funded the majority of the public budget, triggered a severe economic downturn.
  • Approximately $9 billion in foreign reserves remain frozen, restricting liquidity and paralyzing the Afghan banking sector.
  • Persistent droughts and extreme weather events have devastated agricultural yields, worsening food shortages across rural provinces.
  • An estimated 24 million people, more than half of the population, require urgent humanitarian assistance.
  • Restrictions on women working for non-governmental organizations and the United Nations have significantly hindered the distribution of vital aid.

  1. Just reminds you of gaza Lie after Lie you know when your starving BBC you lack the energy to do anything plus you actually look underweight Try looking at the homeless on the streets of britain Another country lying wanting hand outs While theirs shops up the road selling everything they could ever need They just gotta pay for it Like everyone else on the planet

  2. The BBC really don't want to talk about the illegal Western Sanctions that have murdered tens of millions of people all over the world for many decades, never mind the bombs they have dropped on these countries.
    🤫🤐🫣👀🤮

  3. BBC trying to make us feel sorry for an Afghanistan man to sell his daughters to other grown men for food jidion is reporting on this and is disgusting that the BBC feels sorry for a grown man to sell his daughters for food

  4. They obviously can't sustain themselves. Is it a good idea to provide food and ramp up the population artificially? What happens if the western countries can't provide anymore? MORE people will starve to death and there will be no pressure to make their agricultural practices more sustainable. If this collapse won't end Taliban, then nothing will. Let them collaps and get on their feet!

  5. What are we supposed to do about that?? Afghanis should learn to help themselves. You can't save an alcoholic. Europe isn't a Messiah for the world..mind your own business. And let them die in the hell they have made for themselves

  7. Maybe it's because they produce heroin,God curse them…They force their own children to marriage, and still could not make it. God don't want this nation. What a disgusting people

  8. BBC justifies the removal of humanitarian funds from US and UK by making a claim that since Taliban don't give its people's women's rights, we don't give them the right to live. Who is more evil? Taliban that uses its own traditional value to limit the rights of its people, or US and UK using money to get influence, and they remove the money, when the influence is gone? Don't be naive, US and UK AID was never, I repeat, never about these people having a good heart, it's all about using money and power as a coercion as a means to get what they way.

  9. The Taliban are a scourge on the people of Afghanistan. We should be helping people in rural Africa, the Taliban killed our soldiers and dehumanise their women, that government is not worthy of support. While I don’t want the average Afghan family to starve, there are millions of people in other countries that have similar troubles. We can’t help everyone and I’d prefer to help a more forward thinking community.

  10. …….Netanyahu has succeeded in diverting the world's attention from his siege, starvation, and killing of people in Gaza. He has made Trump focus solely on striking Iran so that he can isolate Gaza. He has effectively forgotten Trump's peace plan for Gaza for months. Where are the free people of America and the world in the face of this crime committed by Netanyahu?! He attacks Iran over its nuclear program while he himself possesses a full arsenal of them. The nuclear ban must be applied to everyone in the Middle East, including Israel.
