BBC Investigation Finds Disabled Patients Remain in Hospital Despite Being Fit for Discharge

Date:

A new investigation has revealed that hundreds of disabled individuals, including those with learning disabilities and autism, remain hospitalized despite being declared fit for discharge. These prolonged stays are primarily attributed to a critical shortage of suitable community housing and specialized social care packages. As a result, many patients remain institutionalized for months or even years, which experts and advocates warn can lead to a significant deterioration in their overall health and well-being.

  • Numerous disabled individuals remain in hospital settings long after they are deemed fit to transition to community care.
  • A shortage of appropriate community accommodation and specialized social care support is the main barrier to timely discharges.
  • Some patients have been kept in restrictive hospital environments for months, or in some cases years, past their planned discharge dates.
  • Extended stays in hospital settings can lead to a decline in physical and mental health for individuals with learning disabilities or autism.
  • Advocates are calling for improved funding and coordination between healthcare providers and local authorities to resolve the housing and care deficit.

  1. As a US citizen I always hear from UK NHS fans that they love theur system because they are not a customer but a patient. My response to this is you are not a patient, you are a NUMBER with a dollar/pound sign. The cost still matters and you have fewer choices.

  2. Sooo, my uninformed unsolicited opinion is that these people look like they need to be hospitalized. But, at least in America, we have the right to deny Care. So the idea of a hospital holding someone hostage is crazy to me.

  3. This made me so sad. I’ve been put through absolute hell myself, and lost well over a decade spent bedridden due to medical neglect and medical gaslighting by the NHS. None of these doctors have never given a thought to who they harm, and some of them seem to actually enjoy the power and control that their job allows them to hold over their patients.

I’ve never seen so many uncaring people in one profession as I have with NHS doctors, and they are the last people that should be entrusted with the power to destroy people’s lives like this, yet they are given it over and over and people just expect them not to do it all over again. Did everyone just forget what they did during Covid? They illegally and deliberately gave out do not resuscitate orders to anyone who wasn’t deemed worthy of life in their eyes, which resulted in people with autism or down syndrome just being left to die unnecessarily. If that doesn’t tell you who these people are then I don’t know what will.

We need some sort of truly separate body that can and will stand in the way of this evil nonsense. One that you can go to without fear and especially without any ties or duty to the NHS or its doctors, like the current system where you are supposed to be able to complain, or question something, or push back against the doctors, but in reality it’s only there to protect the staff and the institutions by pretending to be independent or for the patients etc.

It’s so sad that in the video they had to say things like ‘previously they worked for a charity’ just to try prove to people that they have worth in society. Even if they had never left their home in their lives, they still have a right not to be subjected to such inhumane torture.

I suppose I’m almost lucky because while they left me bedridden for so long, at least I was at home. Still I missed out on so much and loosing all that time has harmed and set me back irreparably. There’s no way to get justice either or to fight back against any of this. If you are lucky then all you can hope for is that it ends, which is disgusting in this day and age.

  4. Henry Nowak verdict is over 2hrs old – GBN have been running it for 2hrs: BBC & Sky haven't touched it. This is why all BBC & Sky need killing, for treachery & mendacity.

  5. One of the most horrific scenes in human history has been revealed.
The moment a small child carrying a water jug to her besieged and thirsty family was bombed, killing her and shattering her body.
A video the world must never forget.

  6. This is wild from an American perspective – a ton of this care is not offered or paid for by the government ever.people often refuse care homes, and just make do at home with minimal support.

  7. So correct me if I'm wrong, they want to go home, but they need special care, and the NHS doesn't want to pay for it. They can go into a care home, but they don't wanna do that. What's wrong with the care home? It's still a home paid by the tax payer. I imagine a lot of people gladly accept life in a care home, and these lot are being stubborn and want the special care. Is that fair to everyone to agrees to go into the care home? Why don't they get the special care as well?
