Andy Burnham’s Political Influence and Devolution Goals Analyzed on BBC Newscast

Date:

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has secured significant progress in his negotiations for greater devolution and localized powers, particularly regarding public transport and regional funding models. While representing a substantial shift toward regional autonomy, some limitations remain on the extent of these powers compared to national administrations. The developments highlight ongoing debates about the balance of power between Westminster and regional mayors across the United Kingdom.

  • Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has secured a “trailblazer” devolution deal aimed at granting the region more direct control over its budget.
  • The agreement introduces a “single pot” funding system, allowing local leaders greater flexibility over financial allocations similar to devolved nations.
  • Significant progress has been made on the integration of the “Bee Network,” bringing Greater Manchester’s bus services back under local public control.
  • Central government retains final authority on key legislative and taxation matters, limiting full financial independence for the region.
  • The political negotiations reflect broader, ongoing discussions regarding the scope of regional devolution and the power dynamics between local mayors and Westminster.

  1. He is PM because nobody else in Labour wants to be a sacrificial lamb. Boris was taken out by his own people and we saw a string of PMs that came and left. Then Starmer received the same treatment and now we will get a string of Pms again. Waiting on the sidelines whilst gaining money and backstabbing your teammates is how the game of politics is played. The book A Game of Thrones is about just that. There is a reason why even most Kings and Queens were killed off by their own family and loyal followers.

  2. I've been thinking of applying for my disability but don't need the full help and I do work (full time) but I'm very limited due to mobility, arthritis but would be nice to get a little extra (or make everything cheaper) that would be great for everyone.
