How the UK Government Wasted £10 Billion on COVID-19 PPE

Date:

The UK government incurred approximately £10 billion in financial losses due to wasted personal protective equipment (PPE) purchased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Official accounts show that a significant portion of the equipment bought during the height of the crisis was either overpriced, failed to meet safety standards, or expired before it could be utilized. The Department of Health and Social Care has faced ongoing scrutiny over its procurement processes, high storage costs, and the disposal of unusable items.

  • The Department of Health and Social Care wrote off an estimated £9.9 billion spent on protective equipment purchased during the pandemic.
  • Around £4 billion of the purchased PPE was deemed unusable in the National Health Service because it did not meet clinical standards.
  • Inflated market prices during the initial global shortage resulted in the government paying significantly higher rates for supplies than their post-pandemic valuation.
  • Large quantities of excess gear expired in storage, leading to expensive disposal programs, including incineration.
  • Millions of pounds were spent on storage costs for excess stock kept in containers and warehouses across the country.

  1. Tories took long to acquire PPE, then labour and the mainstream media attacked them for it. That resulted in rash contracts as they attempted to resolve the issue. They're both as bad as each other. We spent 5.5 billion on asylum in one year and continue to do so. Why is that not 'wasted' money?

  2. I found 20 sealed packs of approved full PPE kit fly tipped / unlawful 'bin stuffing' / inside my personal black household refuse bin outside my house on my freehold property during covid, when it was imossible to come by!!!
    WTF was that all about!!!

  3. And in all the years leading up to the pandemic, where were the serious investigative journalists doing their jobs and exposing the woeful lack of preparedness in government? Nowhere. BBC too busy literally spending HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS on someone introducing a football highlights programme, and on people reading news autocues, and on senior managers, and on propaganda. The BBC is just as guilty; you all have blood on your hands.

  4. They did it on purpose! I sad all of it was a scam at the time when everyone called me stupid and a conspiracy theorist…. The reality is if someone like me with an average education can figure that out as it was happening they knew exactly what they were doing

  5. "She couldn't find croneyism or corruption when the deals were finally done." She didn't need to: the corruption was in the unique-in-the-world-to-England fast track procedure. Trebles all round!

  6. Yeah shocking! All this though released on the day Starmer just signed away 78 billion to Ukraine, 78 billion?? And to hide the fact that today also the Labour black hole is now 85 billion. Smoke and mirrors people. Labour are depending on your shock as little people who think 10 billion pounds is all the money in world level……while sneakily squiffing away 160 billion, snap of the fingers just like that. Boris Johnson was an arse, but Keir Starmer and the Labour Party have proved themselves as traitors to his country and it's people.

  7. you aren't pointing out the main problem covid and you're power abuse of lockdowns caused.. you ruined the economy for a stupid virus that ended up completely dying off, where is covid now? yeah that's what i thought.. but you ruined peoples livelihoods and businesses and treated us like Prisoners rather than people.. what they did should be giving all of you general public a serious wake up call of how little freedom we truly have left. it was tyranny straight up. tyranny from a bunch of weaklings..

  8. The timing of this story is interesting.

There have been numerous reports of wasted money during the pandemic and so this isn't new news. I wonder why the BBC have put this out now?…….. 🤔……. 🙄

  9. This report is a whitewash, money was wasted, money was paid to friends of the government who profited financially, they told us lies, they bought shoddy goods, but they couldn’t find any criminality.
