He's done well incorporating drones into the Ukrainian warfare tactics, but an election now for Ukraine helps no one in Ukraine except Fedorov himself. His popularity now is at a sky high and a large part of the Ukrainian people know about him, his work and the reasons for his sacking. Those who do not agree with the old style of warfare will invariably side with him and likely cast a vote for him if he runs. So yes, he is looking out for only his self-interests.
I have to say though, that Zelensky did not handle the confrontation between Fedorov and his head of armed forces well. Instead of outright sacking one, he should have tried to talk to them separately and persuade each to compromise and come together for the greater benefit of Ukraine. Afterall, drones cannot invade or hold territory but the old ways of throwing soldiers into the frontlines also will not work for Ukraine. The head of Ukraine's armed forces and Fedorov were both right and wrong in their views and assessment of the way forward for Ukraine in the war.
