The Mercator projection i/was of course primarily intended for maritime NAVIGATION not politics. A drawn compass course can be accurately followed, map to sea. The far north and the far south of the globe (Greenland and Antarctica) are extremely sparsely populated, so it is politically correct that their size on the map are greatly minimised compared to the old map. While Africa’s population is vastly larger than Russia’s.
