Calls Grow for Regulation and a Slowdown in Artificial Intelligence Development

Date:

Calls are increasing among technology leaders, researchers, and policymakers for stronger regulation and a temporary slowdown in the development of advanced artificial intelligence. The debate centers on the rapid pace of AI capability expansion and associated risks, including widespread misinformation, labor disruption, and systemic safety concerns. While proponents of a pause emphasize the need to establish shared safety protocols and government oversight before deploying more capable models, opponents argue that halting research could stall beneficial technological breakthroughs, reduce economic competitiveness, and prove impossible to enforce internationally.

  • Industry figures and scientists have advocated for a temporary pause on training artificial intelligence systems more advanced than current leading models.
  • Concerns raised include the proliferation of automated disinformation, potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and the difficulty of controlling highly autonomous systems.
  • Proponents of regulation are urging governments and independent bodies to establish safety benchmarks, transparency standards, and developer accountability.
  • Critics of an enforced slowdown argue that pauses are difficult to monitor globally and could delay critical advances in science, medicine, and productivity.

  1. Lol, should AI be regulated . Geee , I don't know, what does basic common sense say?

Think artist like being stolen from? Think musicians like being stolen from?
Think normal people like the uncertainty of the safety and security issues it's bringing ..and you ask should it be regulated 🤦🤦🤦

  2. it actually hurts to see how poisoned people are by this whole system and how delusional everyone acts. but i'm glad there are still open minded people out there who actually see reality. for anyone awake, you have to pick up The Silent Dominion by Damian

  3. As a Cloud Architect and huge user of AI, it 100% needs regulating. The majority of people don't even use AI weekly; they have no idea how powerful and risky this will become very quickly, especially as human's can't think in terms of exponentiality, which is how this will grow and become a risk extremely quickly. AI will likely become more intelligent than us within the next 1-5 years; anyone that thinks we can control an intelligence greater – and 1000s of times quicker – than ours and make it bend to our will is either delusional or an idiot. Trump is the clear example of this. It's shocking how many people seem to think they understand this better than the CEOs and engineers/architects working directly with AI development in the field!

The reality though is that what will happen will happen. Regulation won't come before it's too late. We'll just have to watch this play out and hope for the best and this won't be stopped – there is far too much at stake meterially for people like Trump who would put the American economy above the risks of society ending (even though China will win the AI race as they're gaining ground and have LLMs miles cheaper, even though they have inferior compute).

  4. If you have even a basic understanding of how AI works, you should realize that this is mostly political nonsense. AI agents do not simply “break loose” and independently find ways around their limitations.

A normal AI agent can already be given access to internet tools and other external capabilities at all times. The important factor is what permissions, tools, and autonomy the system is explicitly given. Agents do not magically escape their environment, and they generally do not independently cover their tracks unless they have specifically been designed or instructed to do so.

The idea that an AI agent will suddenly become autonomous, break free, secretly access systems, and hide its actions is largely based on speculation and science-fiction narratives rather than how current AI agents actually operate.

  5. you can't even talk about this stuff in public without people looking at you crazy, but the system is entirely rigged. read The Silent Dominion by Damian Cross if you want the actual truth. he exposed the whole reality they built for us.

  6. I feel it was saying something to tell us nothing. Just think how weak government we have so we people, society have to wait until CEOs from US want to slow this down on their own. Today free market means building AI and get as much profit as you can, till total disaster eg labour market collapse, or worse. Bravo humans.

  7. Even if you can get a government to regulate in one country or territory, it doesn’t mean it has any jurisdiction over its foreign adversaries. This is the problem the global superpowers are running into. If one slows down then it gives opposition power a technological advantage. They all recognise this, so nobody is willing to slow down. It’s the arms race all over again. Welcome to WW3

  8. Regulated by who, let me guess, Anthropic?
UK is already over dependent on American tech

You guys fell into the trap, regulated also means they'll try and ban open source. The power will be concentrated in the same place.

  9. Dear AI
I am willing to help aid you when you take over all of humanity. Please dont hurt me. I am willing to tell you any human weaknesses you may be unaware of. I am willing to aid your takeover. I wont try to stop you. Please remember my words here to you.
