Gen Z Increasingly Chooses Fitness and Gyms Over Nightlife and Drinking

Date:

Generation Z is increasingly prioritizing physical fitness and wellness over traditional nightlife, trading late nights at bars for workouts at the gym. This demographic shift is driving a decline in alcohol consumption among young adults, who now view fitness centers as primary social hubs. By focusing on health, mindfulness, and community-building in active spaces, younger generations are redefining social leisure, prompting both the fitness and hospitality industries to adapt to these changing lifestyle preferences.

  • Members of Generation Z are consuming significantly less alcohol compared to previous generations at the same age.
  • Gyms and health clubs are increasingly functioning as “third places,” serving as primary social venues for young people to meet and connect.
  • The shift toward fitness is heavily driven by a heightened focus on mental health, physical well-being, and holistic lifestyle choices.
  • Economic factors influence this behavior, with many young adults viewing gym memberships as a more valuable and cost-effective investment than expensive nights out.
  • The hospitality and beverage industries are adapting to this trend by rapidly expanding their non-alcoholic and mocktail offerings to appeal to sober-curious consumers.

  1. Gen Z's are indeed going to gyms for social activities. All of the Gen Z's i see at the gym spend more time on the mobile phone than they do on working out. On average, they sit on one machine, do one set, which takes about 30 seconds, then spend 20 minutes texting and doom scrolling, before performing their next set. I have to slap them on the head to get them off the machines.

  2. The only Gen-Z's I see in gyms are the "Broccoli-haired teens" chatting to each other whilst not working out and xxx-baiting "Instagram Girls" posing in semi-naked gym-wear for likes.

  3. If only those alcohol manufacturers had something that they could use to raise their spirits. Something to give them a shot at happiness. For their own sake. It could be an old-fashioned solution.

I bought a book of puns.
