MOM Study: Nearly One in Five Workers in Singapore Overqualified for Their Jobs

Date:

A study by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower has found that nearly one in five resident workers, approximately 17.4%, were overqualified for their positions in 2023. This figure accounts for individuals whose educational qualifications exceed the requirements of their current roles. Although the rate has seen a slight decline from the peak recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, it highlights ongoing challenges in labor market matching. The findings suggest that while some workers select these roles for personal flexibility, others may face a competitive or shifting job landscape.

  • The MOM report indicates that 17.4% of resident workers held jobs for which they were overqualified in 2023.
  • The current rate shows an improvement compared to 2020, when overqualification peaked at 19.3% during the pandemic.
  • Workers under the age of 30 are the most affected demographic, showing higher instances of overqualification than older age groups.
  • Some employees reportedly choose roles below their qualification level to prioritize work-life balance or to facilitate career transitions.
  • The study notes that overqualification remains more prevalent among those with degree-level education compared to those with diploma or lower qualifications.

  1. clown Govt as usual. U keep those useless old fart at the top by raising the retiring age, keep importing MY cowboys, this is why many youngsters are unemployed.

  2. Really don't see what is the issue on overqualification. Some people want to do a certain role because they fking like it and really excel in it. So why can't we just fking respect their choices, preference and even empower people to take such roles should they apply for them?

why should we deny people of the dream roles they want just because of ironically, an overextended piece of paper?
