Rising Demand for Electric Vehicles Redefines Global Industrial Competition

Date:

The global shift toward electric vehicles is reshaping international trade relations, particularly between the European Union and China. As Chinese manufacturers gain a competitive edge through state subsidies and integrated supply chains, European authorities have launched investigations to protect domestic industries from lower-priced imports. This tension highlights a broader struggle to balance ambitious climate goals with economic security and fair competition. While global demand for EVs continues to rise, the automotive industry faces significant challenges regarding raw material sourcing and the urgent need for more affordable battery technology.

  • The European Commission has initiated an anti-subsidy investigation into electric vehicles imported from China to determine if they benefit from unfair state support.
  • Chinese EV manufacturers currently hold a significant cost advantage, allowing them to offer vehicles at prices often substantially lower than those produced by European competitors.
  • China’s dominance in the sector is supported by an established domestic supply chain and long-term investments in battery technology and critical mineral processing.
  • European carmakers are facing increased pressure to accelerate innovation and reduce production costs to maintain market share during the transition from internal combustion engines.
  • The escalating competition has raised concerns about potential trade barriers and retaliatory measures that could disrupt the global automotive supply chain.

  1. China is ahead of the game… The last key they need is a better battery storage system. That way they can transport and sell accumulated energy across oceans, as if it were oil. Selling energy itself directly is the future. The new petrodollar, the Greener Dollar/Yuan.

  2. So now it’s ‘Thanks to Trump for going to war’? You people just don’t want to face the root cause of the problem, isn’t it? It’s like a thief breaks into your house and steals, but when the police come knocking and break down the door to catch him, suddenly everyone says, ‘Oh! It’s the police’s fault. I feel sad for the news outlet being so deflecting and misguided for the future generation.

  3. Yes, The Donald Elon administration is pushing for future industry, actually.

British commonwealth is preparing industry like synthetic fuel, new materials, new coatings, robots, bev. 1.5mw flash chargers.

    No joke

  4. You guys forgot critical nuances 😅 about Chinese EVs
    They are too far…
    Have insufficient customer services 😅
And at last but not least Chinese chip manufacturing is crumbling because of helium shortage 😅
The fuel shortage longer shipping times and auto motive chip shortage do push Chinese EVs price advantage down 👇 the toilet 🚽🪠

  5. The reality of EVs in North America is a little different than what people like to advertise especially in Canada. Apparently, freezing winters, sky-high insurance rates, and limited range are just “minor details.” Gas prices are high right now, but at least they’ll likely drop when the conflict with Iran is over. Meanwhile, EVs are being sold like they’re the perfect solution for everyone. Spoiler alert: they’re not. Do your research before buying into the hype.

  6. I love the irony that the Orange Obscenity's own decision to start a war in the Middle East to move the news cycle away from the Epstein File is now coming back to bite him in the ass and help the Green Energy Transition.

  7. Something tell me China 🇨🇳 and Russia 🇷🇺 benefit out of Trump war.
China has monopol on rare earth and EV production slash export.
    Russia could sell oil.
That's ''ART of a DEAL'' perpetrated by Trump. Something tell me Trump want to help CHINA or RUSSIA. Or maybe he's that stupid. Mf96
All I can see Netanyaho and Putin govern USA very well 👍👏.. Mf96

  8. EVs are a dead duck for the future.
The technology may well be "more mature" but it's fiddling with small bits. Battery density is close to peak – you can't just magically break the laws of physics and somehow squeeze more energy into cells.
So you will forever be hobbled by the fact that you have limited range, recharge times and charger availability, along with the colossal problem of a battery set going useless almost within about 6-8 years, resulting in a cost equal to best part of a new car entirely.
Those things alone render this a dead duck – you CANNOT get round that.
Hybrids are better as they're at least juggling things and offer some way of trying new things out.
Of course on top of all this it all depends about where you are too. If you're in a city somewhere in the world, it might be you can easily accommodate that lack of range, as you might not travel that far. But outside of America most countries have decent public transport to some degree.
If you're rural, or live in colder climes, it can be utterly useless too.
And I don't even have to go to such extremes. I'm British, I live in Lincolnshire (East Coast) and it's rural, though I'm in a town.
I typically travel locally most of the time, which is usually travelling anything up to 50 miles in one direction. That's not a problem. If I go further afield, I'm screwed. There aren't many in the way of charging points even today in Britain. If I find one, chances are it's in use or maybe not working. And even if it is, I have to wait a length of time to get enough charge to carry on. If I were working at Glastonbury this would wreck journey time. Worse than this, being disabled I haven't got a lot of cash, so if I bought one after about 8 years it'd be utterly worthless. I cannot justify such a loss of money.
No, these are dead ducks and always will be.

  9. Canada possesses the essential critical minerals—including lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, and rare earth elements (REEs)—required for EV batteries and motors. Hopefully, Mark Carney, Friedrich Merz, Ursula von der Leyen, and other leaders will put their heads together to work this out and save the European Auto Industry by investing in its future.

  10. And … let's take a moment to realize without a way of 'making' energy …. EV cars are as useless as gasoline/diesel cars!! And, even if EV cars become the main transport mechanism …. the price to 'refuel' them will become unaffordable. Either way …. we're all screwed! I'm an American reaching out to DW for 'real' news but ….. DW is delivering the same crap news as american anchors.
Anyone know where I can get 'real' news? Boots on the ground reporting? I'm so over this … broadcasters stealing from other broadcasts and vomiting the same 'reports?'.
If I sound a little tense …. it's because of the ignorance of the world in not seeing what is in front of their face! Trump is going to murder us all! EV vehicles are the least of our concern!!!

  11. A new Nobel Prize for Sustainability is to be awarded to the genius Donald Trump. Thanks to his genius, sustainability is being given a new lease on life: Sustainability 2.0. The world, including the EU and China, owes him a great debt of gratitude; electric car sales are breaking record after record, all thanks to Donald Trump’s brilliant intervention in the Middle East.

  12. I’m happy to see EV sales soaring as a result of the spike in gas prices. EVs are objectively superior technology – not to mention way more fun to drive, so fast and smooth, and charging at home is a game changer. The switch to EV is inevitable at this point, and those of us who can do math have already pivoted to EVs since they are so much cheaper – but most people can’t do math so they only rely on 1) sticker price of a vehicle and 2) gas prices. Fortunately used EVs eliminate the first point, and gas prices only reinforce how barbaric it is to rely on oil for your daily commute. I would say that by 2035 most nations will be well over half way up the S-curve, and at that point things accelerate because the value of most ICE vehicles falls rapidly and gas prices soar again as stations close down due to sinking demand. You combine that with the fact that renewables are cheaper than fossil fuels, and small nuclear reactors may return thanks to AI demand, so generating cheap electricity is an inevitability. The future is 100% electric. Only Luddites and geriatrics would disagree with this but it is a mathematical certainty

  13. Tesla and Musk promotes neo-nazism ideology.
BYD is owned by the chinese government, promotes forced labour and have no ethics and enviromental protection while building evs.
Choose your poison or public transport.

  14. What an odd coincidence. But it's funny, people will have to be monumentally naive to not realize that once ICE vehicles are phased out, they will jack the cost of EVs AND electricity in general.

  15. Eventually we will all be moving to electric motor. You never run a robot on petrol engine, why? Because it is too primitive to control it. All refined control and management software only works on electric motor, so we don't have a choice. Just like 100 yrs ago, many men so clinging on their horsebacks.

  16. After five years, I couldn't be more pleased with my BMW I3. It can be driven for just 4¢ per mile for "fuel", needs nearly no maintenance, superior performance, what else do you want?
