Impact of AfD Election Gains in Germany on France’s Far Right

Date:

Recent electoral gains by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in eastern German state elections have renewed attention on the trajectory of right-wing populist movements across Europe, particularly regarding France’s National Rally. While both movements have capitalized on voter dissatisfaction surrounding immigration, living costs, and federal governance, significant policy and strategic differences remain between them. Observers are evaluating whether the AfD’s regional momentum will reinforce right-wing support in France or whether differing domestic political environments and past estrangements between the two parties will limit direct cross-border influence.

  • The Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured historic gains in eastern German state elections, including a first-place finish in Thuringia and a close second in Saxony.
  • The electoral results reflect widespread voter discontent with the federal governing coalition, largely driven by concerns over migration, energy costs, and the broader economy.
  • In France, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally has similarly consolidated significant legislative influence following recent parliamentary elections.
  • Despite shared themes of anti-establishment sentiment and border control, formal cooperation between the two parties remains strained following their split in the European Parliament.
  • Traditional governing parties in both nations face ongoing challenges in forming stable legislative majorities while maintaining political firewalls against far-right factions.

  1. Surprise: "RN" and "AfD" are NOT the same thing, and don't share much. They actually are not in the same EU group either, with Le Pen vetoing the AfD access. Not even Marine Marechal is as to the Right as AfD is, and the German Party is currently in an alliance with the Extreme Left at home. Imagine Le Pen receiving substantial support from Melanchon in France!.
FdI is another beast entirely, right of the PPE, but Left of RN. RN was actually a former member of the Conservatives, but left for the Patriots with Orban, starting a more EU sceptic group. AFD is not allowed in either of the Right groups.
Just because you are Right of Macron, it does not mean everyone is "FAAAHHHRRRIGHT": there is Centre-Right, Right, Hard-Right, Far-Right and Extreme-Right. Certain Politics may be shared, but many others are not the same, ad often totally incompatible.

  2. You would think are European brothers and sisters would look at what’s going on America and go ‘oh my God no…’ versus embracing people with the same inclinations as the American president.

  3. Can't fathom how the "far right" are portrayed as the oppressors of minorities in European nations when no such thing as ever happened so far UNFORTUNATELY when the immigrant far right fanatics are oppressing minorities in their home countries with impunity. Will this POS channel focus on that ? No never !

  4. Why is it that voters being able to vote for whomever they please dangerous? No that’s Democracy! If someone wants they too can listen to voters as Le Pen is. No one’s stopping them. Listen to voters. Offer to implement the policies they are asking for. Win!
