Democratic nations are currently facing a significant wave of voter dissatisfaction, driven by a widening gap between government performance and public expectations. Despite positive economic indicators in some regions, many citizens report feeling financially insecure due to inflation and rising housing costs. This disconnect is exacerbated by a sense that political leaders are unresponsive to the concerns of the general population. The resulting frustration has led to increased polarization and a decline in trust toward traditional democratic institutions and mainstream political parties.
- The “expectation gap” describes a phenomenon where citizens’ demands for government services and solutions outpace the state’s practical ability to deliver.
- Macroeconomic data, such as GDP growth or low unemployment rates, often fails to align with the lived financial experiences and perceived quality of life of individual voters.
- Increased political polarization has made it more difficult for democratic governments to reach consensus and pass legislation that addresses long-term structural issues.
- The rise of social media and digital communication has altered how news is consumed, frequently reinforcing existing biases and fueling anti-establishment sentiment.
- Complexity in global challenges, including migration and climate change, contributes to a public perception that current leadership is ineffective or out of touch.
- A growing number of voters in established democracies are turning toward populist or anti-system parties as a way to signal their desire for fundamental political change.

Is this about weak leaders, unrealistic expectations, or something deeper about how democracy works today? Let us know what you think.
All these " democratic leaders" have one thing in common, they are indifferent to the fate of their country and their people, they are henchmen of transatlantic corporations and the oligarchy and strictly follow the commands dictated to them.
ok, lets be real here. Most of this dissatisfaction is based on real problems people are facing. Not just "suddenly being anmoyed at leadership". Our economic and societal models are failing {I direct you to the recent Kurzgesagt video for just one aspect of this) and our governments seemingly fail to realise that instead continue caring only for the wellbeing of the wealthy and old instead of doing anything to adress things.
That democratic governemts especially coalitions tend to have a tough time getting things done only adds to this.
And then we have merz calling his voters lazy and blundering at seemingly every oppertunity.
You don't need a researcher to tell you why he might be unpopular.
Perhaps because income inequality is increasing. Twenty-five years ago, the average disposable income of the richest 10% in OECD countries was about seven times higher than that of the poorest 10%; today, it is about nine and a half times higher, even though so much wealth has never been produced, yet inequality is growing. The causes of widening income gaps, and in particular the rise of the top 1%, are numerous. The more time passes, the more Western presidents succeed one another, the more people understand that they only work to increase the wealth of the 1% oligarchy and not that of the majority of the people.
Very important topic. Thanks for covering it!
The wealth gap continues to widen, the middle class continues to disappear, the faces our societies are increasingly ever more unrecognizable… And this has been going on for decades now… I don't think it fair to put the blame on the "electorate that wants instant gratification and quick fixes". Your guest is missing the point. Every politician that is seen as supporting the changes listed above will be unpopular among the people who are harmed by these changes (which happens to be the majority). They will, however, be very popular among those classes which benefit from the transfer of wealth and power.
Europe, North America and Australia have all had 40+ years of mostly 'centrist' governments wedded to neoliberal ideology and it is these two components that are failing having been accepted as undisputable hegemony since the early 80s. Add-in the usual corruption, dishonesty and scandal and its no wonder that voters are so sick and tired of the same empty promises and completely ineffectual policies.
Need more follow up videos to talk about solution. What are these innovations of democratic systems that could move things in the right direction?
"democratic leadership"
There is nothing "democratic" in fooling the voters every single time and doing what the Oligarchy wants. We might as well have a Open Dictatorship and not bother to vote.
Critical thinking was over the moment YouTube shorts were born
It's because they really work for the rich.
If you tell people the truth instead of beautiful lies, you'll never get elected. To stay in power, you have to lie, lie, and lie some more. Trump and the rulers of authoritarian states know this well, which is why they remain in power. Meanwhile, the governments of democratic countries have some inhibitions against lying, and this causes them to lose popularity.
European should be lucky that they are ruled by non popular leaders trust me you don't want to be ruled by popular leaders. Leaders should never be popular or have high approval ratings. High rating makes them feel untouchable than they crush people rights.
Nobody ever asked for a magical “double your income” promise. People simply want to be able to raise a family, not pay half of their paycheck in taxes and be able to afford food and housing, not see their own government raise their hands and say it’s “your fault for thinking this way” it’s the ultimate insult
For Macron, Starmer and Metz : they keep bringing aggressive military aged men from foreign cultures who don’t work and make the indigenous populations pay for this privilege. What do you not understand? It’s not rocket science. Stop listening to big business and listen to your citizens.
Politicians do not treat voters as adults and just try to please everyone as though they had unlimitted resources. Hence, disappointment is inevitable. From the popularity figures quoted there seems to be an inverse relationship between popularity and ability.
The usa seems one step ahead in this is one
Easy solutions for complex questions seldomly work. Therefore apart from the deficiencies of the present polycrisis, such approval ratings are substantially shaped by externally financed influence operations, supported alike by foreign states, technology magnates, and the wealthiest strata. Their interests converge in the weakening of democratic institutions and the prolongation of the culture war.
Because a sufficiently divided public is seldom capable of resisting the gradual erosion of its rights, liberties, and material security.
Democracy is where the people are, if people are in social media, then democracy is there. But if the social media algorithm chooses what people see and don't see, that's not a fair playing field. Perhaps people should have the right to choose how the content is recommended to them. Freedom of the press should be extended to freedom of media, including social media
Voters vote for freebies… whoever promises to give more and then wine about conditions in the country.
I hope your viewers understand that your 'expert' Laura Thornton happens to be involved in NGOs close to the Democratic Party in the USA and the Open Society Foundation.
Nice pick.
Why? Because that’s just how the world works. You really think that if a politician wishes for something, it will simply happen — even under what you call a 'dictatorial' system? Even if your so-called parliament reaches a consensus, in the end, you still need the support of industrial chains and the grassroots to carry it out. A political leader can only make a decision, a commitment.
Good reporting , but stop that background music !
It is not western leaders so much, but the fall out from the Trump regime the ruin things for all polititions.
Ok I'm a US citizen. And I can't afford a down payment for a house. Every thing is going up. Example wane I got my job 10 years ago coke-cola was 5.99 today it's 13.99 And wages have stagnated
I look at trump and friends and they are stuffing their pockets with everything Thay can grab. Trump has gained so much money in 1 year his entire family could live off for generations without losing anything.
As Laura Thornton argues in this video, the current state of European democracy is partly a failure of mainstream liberal politics to address real concerns, which, in my opinion, created the opening for populist movements to exploit fear and division — and also a failure of the left to grow a spine and stop trying to please Greeks and Trojans.
Switzerland's Federal Council model — a collegial executive with a rotating, largely symbolic presidency — distributes power in a way that makes that kind of democratic erosion harder. The Council roughly mirrors the country's electoral breakdown, which at the moment skews conservative. It's not my politics, but it's a genuine reflection of where my country stands and is respected for it.
The elephant in the room is the one you didn't talk about…….. The fact that where we are today is the result of 50-60 years of governments….. largely centerist, but not exclusively….. not quite meeting the moment; not quite hitting the mark. Each of them has been one paving stone on the road which brought us here.
And when generations of governments each in succession, fail a little bit, and each kick 5 cans down the road and only pick up 2, and when that's compounded over decades, you reach a place where several hundred cans are stacked up against a wall and there is no more road left to kick them down. You reach a point where the problems are so numerous and so vast, and the fixes so costly and painful, that no one could ever hope to solve them, even with the best of intentions. But in the interests of seeking power and perks, plenty will promise to do so.
