23andMe Navigates Financial Crisis and Strategic Pivot Amid Corporate Restructuring

Date:

Once valued at billions of dollars, the genetic testing pioneer 23andMe is navigating a critical transition following severe financial declines, a major data breach, and the recent resignation of its independent board members. CEO Anne Wojcicki is currently working to take the company private to facilitate a restructuring of its business model. To secure a viable future, the company is shifting its focus from one-time DNA test kits toward recurring subscription-based health services and drug discovery, aiming to leverage its vast genetic database amid ongoing financial challenges.

  • 23andMe popularized direct-to-consumer DNA testing, reaching a peak valuation of approximately $6 billion after going public in 2021.
  • The company’s stock price has since fallen by over 95%, raising the risk of delisting from the Nasdaq stock market.
  • A significant data breach in late 2023 compromised the information of approximately 6.9 million customers, impacting consumer trust and company valuation.
  • In September 2024, all of the company’s independent board members resigned over strategic disagreements regarding CEO Anne Wojcicki’s proposal to take the company private.
  • The company is currently attempting a strategic pivot by focusing on subscription-based preventative healthcare and utilizing its database for pharmaceutical drug development.

  1. When you give a company YOUR DNA to test, and then they sell that off to others… yeah, they’re cooked.

Funny enough, that social media giants and basically every site, takes any data they can collect from us, to sell off 🤔

And we’re not getting paid for our privacy to be abused and our trust to be used like this.

Pretty wild that lobbying and propaganda is stronger than the people, at large.

Only takes a few people bribing a few millions, and then billions of people are bought and sold…

Modern day slavery. Kanye was right. At least today, slavery is a choice. Because we’re all slaves to the Internet.

  2. Beautiful. Really much informative on how a company can quickly grow and collapse. It's really helpful for entrepreneurs going through a lot. And how quickly people who where supportive in the very beginning can change their minds suddenly. As entrepreneurs we have to be really careful and selective on how we carry ourselves when successful. Not every single door out there is meant to be opened. Not every single event is meant to be attended. Entrepreneurs are not "stars". We're [problem solvers].

  3. The only thing you cannot buy as a business/company is TRUST and they lost it by that data breach and there are other similar companies now in the same space so 23andMe is thing of the past

  4. Woman owned and run companies are few few – if successful the big players get scared and want to and do squash them –
If the government would tell insurance companies to cover for those lab test( genetic , food sensitivity, vitamin and mineral deficiency etc) then people who really care for there health wouldn’t buy the kit

  5. It seems that 23andme doubled down on the traditional data hoarding strategy with a limited recidivism of its main service and untenable long term returns by monetization partnerships of these datasets. So what exactly is their new revenue model?
