Colleges and universities across the United States are preparing for a significant decline in prospective students, driven largely by falling birth rates following the 2008 financial crisis. This demographic shift, often termed the enrollment cliff, coincides with rising tuition costs and growing skepticism regarding the return on investment for traditional four-year degrees. As a result, higher education institutions are facing mounting budget pressures, prompting program reductions, mergers, and strategic shifts to attract non-traditional learners.
- A drop in U.S. birth rates beginning around 2008 is projected to sharply reduce the number of high school graduates reaching college age.
- Small private liberal arts colleges and regional public universities are experiencing the most immediate financial pressure from declining enrollment.
- Increasing costs of attendance and student debt concerns are leading more students to consider alternative career pathways, including vocational training and direct workforce entry.
- Institutions are adapting by consolidating academic departments, expanding online education, and increasing recruitment efforts for adult and international students.

ai will destroy colleges
Colleges are a waste of money. Go to a trade school, learn a craft that everyone will need and go forth and be happy. DO NOT go to a college. Remember, a college is simply a company, getting you to pay them money and go into debt that you will never pay off but will drain your wealth as life goes on.
I'm glad I grew up in the era of college. But that era is ending. When industry changes faster than professors & curriculums, it makes sense to pursue more granular education. 6 month boot camps, seasonal education, learning while working, learning on the job. Jobs as education. What we lose, of course, is long-form intellectual pursuits. Humanities, liberal arts, philosophy, and exposing our society to truly existential and critical thinking. But it is logical to abandon those pursuits in favor of income. Perhaps colleges should offer cheaper ways to get adult education and make it more experiential and fun. We can read Plato at any age, it doesn't need to be immediately after high school and postpone working. Also, jobs should allow us to take sabbatical to pursue education.
College 😂 everyone gets a Degree with failing grades.. facts
Geeeee I wonder why?? Maybe it’s because education cost so much freaking money in the United States and people don’t wanna go into debt for hundreds of thousands of dollars this is a shining example of the late stage capitalism that the United States is in.
Too expensive & no job security/guaruntee. Better off getting into trades or building a desired skillset through bootcamps/course certifications.
I feel bad for the kids excited to graduate college only to apply to entry level jobs that need x amount of years of work experience or applying and waiting almost a year to get some type of response or job offer
MeidasTouch host Ben Meiselas reports on Ukraine President Zelenskyy hitting back hard at traitor Donald Trump's plan with Putin which includes depriving Zelenskyy of Starlink access in addition to not giving Zelenskyy an interceptor license.
Coming from the eu it is insane to me that colleges cost so much in the US. I struggled getting through college, but because i had to somehow get money for rent/food, not because i had to pay tuition. If i had to pay tuition i could never have afforded it. I still had to work to get some income, but college being free is what enabled me to educate myself.
The weirdest thing is, isnt it in the country's best interest to have more educated people? Surely it benefits it more overall than the cost of tuition. I dont get it. It also creates a true meritocracy not just "can you afford to pay for tuition?" question. Tons of potentialy brilliant engineers/scientists are probably missed because of this. Kinda sad to be honest.
lol I wonder why
I got an astrophysics degree. WASTE OF TIME.
College degrees are worthless because women have them now. 😂
A crappy degree from a crappy regional college is a waste of time and money. Only a qualification from a proper university with international standing has weight on a resume these days. Employers now look for candidates who can do stuff from day one. That have skill sets that bring expertise. They do not want an 18yo who barely scraped through high school and who has not taken steps to gain skills.
