Rising Unemployment and Economic Challenges Fuel Discontent Among Indian Youth

Date:

Young people in India are expressing growing frustration over limited employment opportunities, intense competition for public sector exams, and high unemployment among graduates. Despite rapid national economic growth, many entry-level positions fail to offer job security or adequate wages, driving educated youth into informal or gig economy roles. The self-deprecating term “cockroach youth” has emerged among some young workers to describe their struggle to survive and adapt within an overcrowded job market that has not kept pace with population growth.

  • High unemployment rates persist among India’s educated youth despite overall national economic growth.
  • Millions of applicants routinely compete for a limited number of government and public sector jobs.
  • An undersupply of formal corporate roles has forced many graduates into low-paying gig work or temporary contracts.
  • The term “cockroach youth” reflects self-deprecating sentiment among young people adapting to precarious economic conditions.
  • Economists highlight a structural gap between rising higher education attainment and the domestic creation of skilled jobs.

  1. NEED THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS TOPIC FROM AN INDIAN – most of the protests were members of students political outfits. They are waiting for the past 12 years to get their party elected and that is not happening. With enough planning and the right circumstances, keeping students as a cover, they pulled this off. The government didn't want a huge negative press and decided to let go off the education minister. The truth is, all the other dozens of parties in the opposition which funded this protest are totally corrupt to the core.

  2. No Indian youth are full of hope and vigour. This protest was staged by deep state to throw out the elected government. Just it nothing else. Communists, leftists, Marxists, Maoists, Islamists, Christians all colluded to sabotage Indian State.

  3. 4:49 don't be bais and tell false and not even half story of what happened. And if you guys are sach honest tell world why Pakistani govt killing Pakistan illegal occupied Kashmir civilization in multiple hundreds who protesting just for Food, Electricity and basic need.

  4. There isn't a "glut of graduates"… there's a shortage of job creation due to excessive emigration which is due to excessive regulation within India's borders. Indian policies chase away its biggest prospective job creators to other nations.

  5. Thank you so much for covering this. In reality, not just Gen Z, but people from all spheres participated in this struggle. And now E20 Janata Party is becoming popular because the government is not providing pure petrol and diesel to the citizens. NITIN GADKARI is the next

  6. The cockroach movement is just anger of the youth of the country, now they will by defacto get the votes of us. Next election they will definitely win seats and our voice will grow, hopefully it will topple the status co.

  7. Foreign companies need to leave India as soon as possible. They are funding the Modi-BJP-RSS Criminal Enterprise. Social Media companies are helping the Government silence the protesters. India is the most unstable country in the world.
