  1. I have dived dozens of times in the Maldives, these divers were not at all prepped for 100m, they either did not plan to go that deep got disoriented and went deeper, or they thought going that deep would be easy with their current gear. This is strange, the local crew looked surprised they went that deep, so surely they didn't know those divers were planning on going deep. Secondly, like the person in this video said, due to the depth of the dive, the Maldivian authority should have been notified, hinting to an unplanned dive at that depth. Lastly, it is mandatory to watch scuba diving safety videos before doing any kind of diving, even if anyone is a professional diver with licences, requiring different blends for deeper dives is covered in it, they all definitely knew the risks and something went terribly wrong.

  2. This ‘global affairs correspondent ‘ hasn’t even bothered to speak to a qualified diver to inform himself before going on air.

Where to start… ok we don’t have ‘oxygen cylinders’ in scuba diving. Second, it’s inconceivable that these divers went down without secondary tanks. Third, whatever depth they reached it certainly wasn’t 100 metres, as the correspondent claims.

The dive was led by an experienced professional diver and there was also a dive instructor with 7 years working in the Maldives. This was an extremely hazardous dive for which they would have made a detailed dive plan, including the use of Trimix gas to avoid nitrogen narcosis and oxygen toxicity.

If the caves had been at 20m instead of 50m they would all still be alive. Non divers perhaps don’t appreciate the severe dangers of depths over 35m. There just isn’t any time to resolve problems at that depth. You burn through your air so fast.

This tragic accident has nothing to do with recreational diving, which is very safe. It’s the sort of dive adrenaline junkies do to push the boundaries. 99% of divers would have said ‘absolutely not’ if their dive master suggested something like this.

  3. 60m on a regular setup is wild. IIRC A standard open water diving licence limits you to 18m, and an advanced qualifications only permit 30m depth.

Cave dives are dangerous enough at the best of times, exploring at those depth without the proper equipment and preperation is crazy… A qualified diver should know that a standard Oxygen & Nitrogen mix is suicide in a cave at that depth. 🙁

  4. It’s really weird these are professionals and most of them are doctors in marine biology and have decent knowledge about diving and human biology. Did something ended them from below?

  5. It's a terrible accident! The sucking current that often occurs in underwater ocean caves can be very dangerous. It just sucks you in, and it's very difficult to swim out. Also, did the divers use technical equipment to go to those depths? Going below 40 meters exposes you to diving beyond recreational limits. This means you have to have a proper plan for ascent and decompression underwater. That requires at least an extra redundant gas supply and a proper plan. Do we have any information if the divers had that? I've read somewhere that they were equipped just as for recreational diving gear… Is that confirmed? Did they all have a technical diving experience, and did they have proper permission to dive that deep in the Maldives? Loads of mixed information everywhere. Exploring depths or even caves is not that dangerous if you follow proper procedures and training when you do it.

  6. So sad. I don’t think the deceased marine biologist, Monica, with her level of experience (>5,000 recorded dives), was reckless enough to bring her daughter and her team of researches into the cave with entrance alone more than 50m depths. What I think possibly happened:

    1) They were diving to safe depth outside the cave
    2) A strong underwater current flowing from outside, into the cave, first chamber, second chamber, third chamber and into the abyss, swept them into the cave
    3) Once inside, the silt at the cave floor is heavily disturbed by the current creating zero visibility
    4) now they are more than 50m deep, nitrogen narcosis potentially happpened impairing actions
    5) in zero visibility with current flowing inwards, they might have blow some bubbles to find direction, but if bubbles follows the current, they might be misled to go deeper into the cave

Its a sad day for the diving community. May their souls rest in peace.

  7. Along with another shark attack victim dying over the weekend, it seems that if someone were to build a humongous artificial body of water and stock it with non-predatory fish and make it look as realistic as possible, like a gigantic aquarium with geological features, they could entice divers and so forth from all over the world to come and enjoy it. Build one of those wave-maker things next to it as well for surfers. A true destination spot.

Point being, a safe environment for humans with no sharks or dumb-deadly dangers like a damned cave 160 feet down to get stuck in.

  8. 60 meters ? I have been to 56 meters on air for less than a minute, I felt extremely high… O2 is poisonous at that depth, I feel so sorry for their relatives, as this is irresponsible suicide….

  9. Cocky Italian men show off and take women down to their doom. are we sugar coating this because they’re pretty white girls? they died due to negligence and ignorance.. Every diver knows the rules you are obligated to know the rules and inform those diving with them the rules..yet they completely disregarded the diving limit.. perhaps the women were innocent but the men who lead the dive were clearly showing off and it got them all killed.

  10. Some beautiful Italian ladies just don’t go and do that stuff it’s not really smart and you have all that beauty. Don’t go throwing it away and just be above water enjoying your vacation and if you want to swim just do it around people not all by yourselves it’s how you get lost for a minute and then it turns tragic!

  11. Sad but why do thede white people go to Asia and never follow laws or even common sense. They didn't get permission or speak to experts in the country. Going past 30m is illegal. A rescuer also died thanks to these white colonisers not following laws
